Uluwatu Temple : Temple that Floats Above the Sea

Uluwatu temple or Pura Luwur is one of the Sad Khayangan temples. The others Sad Khayangan temple are Lempuyung temple, Pura Goa Lawah temple, Pura Watu Karu temple, Bukit Pengalengan temple and Besakih temple. There are 6 temples which are places of public worship.

Uluwatu temple is located 30 kilometers to the south of the Pecatu village in Bali island. Uluwatu temple is a unique place that is highly jutting into the sea about 70 meters above sea level as if it floated on sea water and only the eastern part is related to land. Indonesian (Indian) ocean around the temple has high waves. This causes the region is favored by surfing lover.

If you see the temple to the west, you’ll see beautiful sea views, especially at sunset. In addition to seeing beautiful scenery, you also can see and play with the monkeys. This Luhur temple was established by the master Kuturan Marakata during the 9th century. Another opinion says that this temple can’t be separated with a history of Dang Hyang Nirartha/ Rauh Wawu Sakti of Daha (East Java), a pastor spreading Hindu religion.
